Dermal Filler

As we age, our faces naturally lose the vital components that give our skin volume, structure, and lift. These include collagen, elastin, subcutaneous fat, muscle, and eventually bone. As a result, the skin starts to stretch and sag, causing lines to form from a lack of volume and support. Dermal fillers can help replenish volume and structure, soften wrinkles, and enhance facial features like the cheeks, lips, and jawline.

What are dermal fillers and how do they work?

Dermal fillers are products comprised of various safe substances that restore volume and fullness when injected into the skin. Although there are many different fillers available today, and each is slightly different, all focus on adding youthful volume to the skin to smooth and contour, lift and support, or enhance a feature such as the lips.

Dermal fillers volumize the skin differently depending on their ingredients:

  • Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers: Once injected, Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers (Juvéderm® and Restylane®) work by attracting water from surrounding tissues to cause a plumping effect. As a molecule, hyaluronic acid attracts and binds over 1,000 times its weight in water to itself. This quality allows HA fillers to instantly plump the lips or soften wrinkles with soft, natural-looking results. Your provider can also reverse the effects of HA fillers with a product called hyaluronidase.
  • Calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA) Fillers: Calcium hydroxyapatite dermal fillers (Radiesse®) use CaHA suspended in a gel carrier to restore support and volume to the face and hands. Over time, your body absorbs the gel and stimulates new collagen production.
  • Collagen Fillers: Collagen fillers (Bellafill®) contain collagen safely sourced from bovine material combined with small polymethyl methacrylate beads. These fillers provide immediate volume and lift to correct wrinkles and acne scars. Once injected, collagen microspheres stay in place and create a base that provides structural support for smoother-looking skin over time.
  • Poly-L Lactic Acid (PLLA) Fillers: PLLA fillers (Sculptra® Aesthetic) is more of a collagen stimulator than a filler. Instead of working instantaneously to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, PLLA fillers work deep within the dermis to help revitalize collagen production and help restore your skin's inner structure and volume. Unlike other dermal fillers, results develop over time.

Dermal fillers aren't just for softening fine lines and wrinkles! They are also used for:

  • Fill hollows under the eyes
  • Enhance the shape, size, fullness, and definition of your lips
  • Create a more contoured nose
  • Restore volume to deflated earlobes, so earrings have more support
  • Create a more masculine chin and jawline on men
  • Sharpen the angles and definition of the chin and jawline
  • Smooth the bands of the neck
  • Rejuvenate the neckline
  • Smooth the appearance of creases on the chest/décolleté
  • Replace volume loss in the temples
  • Restore a fuller, smoother, more youthful appearance to the hands
  • Improve the appearance of recessed scarring
  • Enhance the balance of facial features
  • Restore symmetry to facial features

What are the different types of dermal fillers?

There are various types of dermal fillers on the market. Infinite Youth Medical Spa offers a broad selection to ensure that we can meet the aesthetic goals of each of our patients.

  • The Juvéderm® collection by Allergan Aesthetics is a hyaluronic acid-based family of dermal fillers indicated for areas of the face. This collection includes Volbella™, Vollure™, Voluma™, Juvéderm®, Juvéderm® Ultra, and Juvéderm® Ultra Plus. Depending on the filler used, results last anywhere from 12 months to two years.
  • The Restylane® collection by Galderma is a hyaluronic acid-based family of dermal fillers indicated for areas of the face. This family includes Restylane®, Restylane® KYSSE™, Restylane® Lyft™, Restylane® Silk™, Restylane® Refyne™, and Restylane® Defyne™. Results last up to 12 months.
  • Revanesse® VERSA™ is a hyaluronic acid-based filler that may cause less swelling for some patients than other HA filler options.
  • Radiesse® is a safe, FDA-approved dermal filler made of unique calcium-based microspheres suspended in a natural gel. It is great for cheeks, nasolabial folds, marionette lines (sides of the mouth), jowls, and the backs of the hands. It is a voluminous filler that is non-reversible and lasts about 12-15 months.
  • Bellafill® uses an innovative blend of two distinct components to create immediate and long-lasting results. Suspended within its smooth collagen gel are tiny polymethyl methacrylate microspheres. Once injected, the collagen goes to work immediately, adding natural-looking volume and softening lines. Over time, your body naturally metabolizes collagen. The PMMA microspheres work as a scaffolding system, supporting your collagen development and laying the foundation for long-term smoothness. Most patients need two to five syringes to achieve results, sometimes more. Results may last up to five years.
  • Sculptra® Aesthetic is made with a biocompatible, biodegradable, synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid, which is gradually absorbed by the body. Sculptra® is injected within the deep dermis, where strands of collagen support your skin's structure. Over time, Sculptra® helps the body reproduce lost collagen. The number of appointments and the number of vials per appointment varies on how much collagen is lost. Results develop over time and last two years or more for most patients.

How much does dermal filler cost?

The cost of dermal fillers is entirely dependent on the product selected and how many syringes are needed to achieve your aesthetic goals. The price per syringe of filler may range anywhere from $650-$900.

How do I care for my skin before and after a dermal filler treatment?

Before your dermal filler appointment, your provider may instruct you to avoid the use of aspirin, ibprofen, and other supplements, like fish oil, which may thin the blood and increase the chance of bruising. If your lips are being injected and you have a history of fever blisters or cold sores, you may be advised to take a prophylactic antiviral before your appointment to discourage a breakout.

During your treatment, your provider will use ice to ease any discomfort from the injections. Many dermal fillers also have numbing agents within the filler to keep you comfortable during treatment.

Immediately after your dermal filler treatment, there will be some swelling and tenderness. In addition, there is a chance of bruising, so we recommend scheduling your appointment well before any special events.

Swelling and bruising may last up to two weeks but generally subsides within three to five days. You may choose to take the supplement Arnica Montana before your appointment to shorten the lifespan of any potential bruising. You may wear makeup immediately after your appointment. In some cases, we may advise you to massage the injected area several times a day, such as with Sculptra®.

Your results from all dermal fillers (except Sculptra® Aesthetic, which takes three to six months to see the full effect) will be immediate. You can assess your final results after two weeks once any swelling has subsided. Depending on which filler you have had injected, expect your results to last anywhere from one to five years.
